Croft House X AAHA Studio

AAHA Studio has been a fan of the pieces coming out of Croft House for years and we were thrilled to be asked to style one of their newest lines - The Marella Collection

We took inspiration from the collection name and began by thinking of an Italian seaside village and the shadows that move across the architecture in the late afternoon sun. Through this exploration we were reminded of the 1933 essay by Japanese novelist Jun'ichirō Tanizaki “In Praise of Shadows” which explores traditional Japanese aesthetics through the lens of darkness and shadow. A sense of play emerged through these two seemingly disparate avenues of thought - it was no longer In Praise of Shadows but Of Plants and Shadows. 

Thinking about Croft’s blend of natural elements and contemporary aesthetics we composed the showroom by creating negative space and shadows through the use of paint and custom window graphics and filled the new pieces of furniture to overflowing with plants.

Bringing all of these elements together was both a challenge and a practice in joy and play. The installation felt very fitting to both Croft’s interpretation of quintessential California style and AAHA Studio’s interest in the interplay of light and shadow in architecture, especially in respect to California’s famously unique light (both natural and not).
