What my husband and I truly appreciated as clients was that they really took into consideration our inspiration and took the time to understand how our family "lives." Because of this, they designed a home that is not only beautiful but practical and functional.

let the light in
On a narrow urban site where tight setbacks and close proximity to neighbors are constant challenges, the indoor atrium was designed to solve the problem of a lack of light reaching the interior of the home that is inherent in a deep lot with an elongated floor plan. By leveraging the existing second-floor setback, we transformed an underutilized recessed pocket into a central lightwell that delivers a far more effective light source than standard windows or doors.
Reconstructing the Sense of Home
The deepest sense of loss for the homeowners was not tied to the physical building itself, but to the near-total destruction of their personal belongings and possessions. Therefore, the focus shifted from honoring the original architecture to rebuilding the sense of home—a process that involved simultaneously restoring the physical structure and reconstructing the emotional container for their family.
THE WHOLE PACKAGE
Rather than creating isolated compartments, we utilized strategic openings—such as the gym extending onto an outdoor deck and the living room merging with the atrium—to allow smaller footprints to feel significantly more expansive. By designing multifaceted spaces, such as a theater that could potentially function as a bedroom, we maintained a sense of intimacy where every area has its own distinct identity while remaining part of a cohesive, flowing whole. This approach leverages the site's footprint to create a residence that feels grounded and connected rather than massive, ensuring that even specialized zones feel like natural extensions of the larger home.
